Octopus
Octopus is one of Tanzania’s best-known coastal catches and a natural export line.
Lobster
Lobster is our premium line.
Squid / Calamari
Squid — known locally as ngisi — is a high-turnover line that works as hard on a hotel buffet as it does on an export pack.
Crab
Mud crab (mangrove crab) is a premium coastal line with strong demand in resorts, seafood restaurants and export markets.

Fresh fish is the backbone of coastal supply.
Kingfish
Kingfish, known locally as nguru, is the narrow-barred Spanish mackerel (Scomberomorus commerson).
Tuna
Tuna, jodari in Swahili, is a pelagic fish of the open Indian Ocean.
Snapper & Emperor
Changu is the Swahili name for emperor fish (Lethrinus), the reef fish most often sold as “snapper” on the Tanzanian coast; true snappers land alongside them.
Sato (Tilapia)
Sato is the Swahili name for Nile tilapia, a mild, white-fleshed lake fish that suits frying, grilling and stews.
Sangara (Nile Perch)
Sangara is the Swahili name for Nile perch, a large lake fish with firm, white flesh that suits grilling, frying and curries.
Who we supply
Cleaned, graded and packed
Alongside whole seafood by the kilo, we clean, grade and pack. Tiger prawns, shrimp and squid come in frozen 500 g packs, and sato and sangara from Lake Victoria are cleaned, graded, frozen and sold by weight. Prices are confirmed with each order.

How our seafood is supplied
Sourced from the Indian Ocean and Lake Victoria
Our seafood is sourced right along Tanzania’s Indian Ocean coast — north to south and across to Zanzibar — through coastal fishing communities and supply networks. Working across multiple grounds is how we keep supply steady through the season and honour standing orders. Sato (tilapia) and sangara (Nile perch) come from Lake Victoria, through Mwanza.

Supplied on ice and never frozen, for cooking soon after delivery. Species and sizes follow what the coast is landing.

How do I order?+
Send your list on WhatsApp, by phone or email two days before you need it. There is no online shop: we confirm price and availability and deliver on the agreed day. Prices move with the catch.
What seafood does Samaki Direct supply?+
Prawns (all sizes), shrimp, octopus, lobster, squid (ngisi), crab and a rotating range of fresh fish, plus sato (tilapia) and sangara (Nile perch) from Lake Victoria. Seafood is supplied whole by the kilo, as landed or cleaned, fresh, chilled or frozen; tiger prawns, shrimp and squid also come cleaned, graded and packed in frozen 500 g packs.
What are kamba, pweza and ngisi in English?+
Kamba is prawns, pweza is octopus, ngisi is squid, kaa is crab and kamba koche is spiny lobster. For fish: nguru is kingfish, jodari is tuna, changu is emperor fish (often sold as snapper), and chewa is grouper.
Do you supply hotels and resorts in Zanzibar?+
Yes. We supply Zanzibar’s beach resorts and mainland hotels with fresh catch, plus chilled and frozen seafood. See our seafood supplier for hotels in Zanzibar page.
Do you export seafood from Tanzania?+
Yes — we support export enquiries from distributors, wholesalers and international buyers. Export documentation depends on the product, destination and applicable Tanzanian regulations, and is arranged where applicable.
Where is your seafood sourced?+
Right along the Tanzanian coast — Tanga, Bagamoyo, Mkuranga, Lindi, Mtwara — and Zanzibar. Sourcing from multiple grounds helps keep supply steady through the season.
What is the minimum order?+
