Product overview

PRD 01Herbs & Spices

Turmeric is the rhizome of a plant in the ginger family, valued for its deep orange colour and earthy flavour. In Swahili it is manjano, which also means yellow. It grows in the soil like ginger, on smallholder farms on the Tanzanian mainland. ShambaFresh supplies turmeric fresh, as dried fingers, or ground, graded to the specification you buy to.

We supply turmeric in three forms: fresh rhizomes for kitchens and processors, dried fingers for spice packers and grinders, and ground powder. Buyers judge turmeric on colour, aroma, moisture and cleanliness, and many test the curcumin content themselves, so we agree the form and grade with you in writing and send samples on request.

Origin & farming

PRD 02Sourcing

Turmeric likes warmth, rain and loose, fertile soil, and grows well on the Tanzanian mainland, often on the same farms that grow ginger. We buy through our outgrower network, so every lot has a known area of origin.

Turmeric is grown by smallholders with organic-minded practices: mulch, crop rotation and little or no use of chemicals. It is not certified organic; if your market requires certification, tell us in your enquiry and we will be straight with you about what we can offer.

Quality, harvest & handling

PRD 03Every step
01

Quality control

Every lot is checked before dispatch for colour, aroma, moisture, foreign matter and mould, and fresh turmeric for firmness and damage. Turmeric that falls short is set aside, so what you receive matches the order.

02

Harvesting

Turmeric is lifted from the soil when the leaves turn yellow and dry, after a long growing season. The rhizomes are dug carefully, cleaned of soil, and either packed fresh or taken for curing.

03

Sorting & grading

For dried turmeric, the fingers are boiled or steamed, dried and polished, then sorted and graded by size and colour; the round bulbs are graded separately. Powder is milled from cleaned, dried turmeric. We agree the form and grade with you before we pack.

04

Packaging

Dried fingers and powder are packed in clean, food-grade bags, lined sacks or cartons, sealed against moisture and light. Fresh turmeric is packed in ventilated cartons or crates.

05

Storage

Dried turmeric and powder keep best sealed, cool, dry and out of the light, which protects the colour. Fresh turmeric is kept cool and ventilated and moved quickly.

06

Transport

Dried turmeric and powder ship at ambient temperature by sea or air. Fresh turmeric moves by road within Tanzania and by air or cool chain for export.

Frequently asked questions

FAQBuyer questions

What is turmeric called in Swahili?

Turmeric is manjano in Swahili, the same word as the colour yellow.

Do you supply fresh or dried turmeric?

Both, and ground powder too. Fresh rhizomes suit kitchens and juice makers; dried fingers suit spice packers and grinders; powder is ready to use.

What is the curcumin content of your turmeric?

Curcumin varies by crop and lot, so we don’t promise a single figure. We send samples so you can test them, and agree the specification with you before we pack.

Is your turmeric organic?

It is grown by smallholders with organic-minded practices and little or no use of chemicals, but it is not certified organic. If your market requires certification, tell us your destination and we will be straight with you.

How do I get a price for turmeric from Tanzania?

We quote per order, by form, grade, volume and destination. Send us those and we will come back with a quote and the terms.

What is the minimum order?

It depends on the form, pack and destination. Tell us your target volume and we will confirm what we can meet.
