Product overview

PRD 01Fresh Produce

The leek is a mild member of the onion family, grown for its long white shank and pale green inner leaves. Chefs use it in soups, stocks, sauces and braises, where it gives a softer, sweeter onion flavour. ShambaFresh supplies fresh leeks from smallholder farms in the Lushoto highlands of the Usambara Mountains to commercial buyers in Dar es Salaam, Zanzibar and beyond.

We supply leeks fresh and whole: roots trimmed, outer leaves cleaned and the green tops cut to the length your kitchen or market prefers. They can be packed loose by weight or in bunches. A long, firm, white shank is what buyers pay for, so that is what we grade on.

Origin & farming

PRD 02Sourcing

Leeks grow best in cool weather and deep, fertile soil, and the Usambara Mountains around Lushoto in Tanga region are one of Tanzania’s best-known highland vegetable areas. Farmers there grow leeks alongside cabbage, cauliflower and carrots, and earth up the stems as they grow to blanch a long white shank. Buying through our outgrower network gives a named, traceable origin.

Our highland vegetables are organically grown and non-GMO: farmers rely on natural farming — crop rotation, mulching, compost and careful water management — supported by agronomy guidance from our team. They are not certified organic; if your market requires certification, tell us in your enquiry.

Quality, harvest & handling

PRD 03Every step
01

Quality control

Each lot is checked for straight, firm shanks with a good length of white, fresh unwilted leaves, and freedom from bolting (flower stems), rot, pest damage and excess soil. Leeks that fall short are set aside so what you receive matches the order.

02

Harvesting

Leeks are lifted by hand when the shanks reach market size, loosened from the soil to avoid snapping, and taken out of the sun quickly to keep the leaves fresh.

03

Sorting & grading

After lifting, leeks are cleaned of soil and loose outer leaves, roots and tops are trimmed, and stems are sorted by shank thickness and length into the grades you buy.

04

Packaging

Leeks are packed loose by weight in ventilated crates or cartons, or tied in bunches, with tops cut to your preferred length. Pack size and labelling follow your specification.

05

Storage

Leeks keep well cold and humid, close to 0 °C with high humidity. We hold them cool and shaded between harvest and dispatch so they arrive firm and fresh.

06

Transport

From Lushoto, leeks travel by road to Dar es Salaam, Tanga and Arusha, kept cool and out of the sun, and across to Zanzibar from Dar es Salaam. For export they move on a cold chain by air or refrigerated sea freight depending on destination.

Frequently asked questions

FAQBuyer questions

Where do your leeks come from?

From smallholder farms in the Lushoto highlands of the Usambara Mountains, in Tanga region. The cool climate and deep soil there grow long, white-shanked leeks.

What is the difference between leeks and spring onions?

Leeks are larger and milder, with a long, thick white shank and flat leaves, and are usually cooked. Spring (green) onions are thinner, with hollow leaves, and are often used raw.

Do you supply leeks to hotels in Dar es Salaam and Zanzibar?

Yes. We supply hotels, restaurants and caterers in Dar es Salaam, Arusha and Zanzibar on a regular schedule. Tell us your weekly volume, trim and delivery days.

Are your leeks organic?

They are organically grown and non-GMO, using natural farming methods. They are not certified organic. If your market requires certification, tell us your destination and we will be straight with you about what we can offer.

Can you trim and bunch leeks to our specification?

Yes. We trim roots and tops to your preferred length and pack loose by weight or in bunches, graded by shank size.

What is the minimum order?

It depends on the destination, pack and delivery schedule. Tell us your target volume and we will come back with what we can meet and the terms.
