Product overview

PRD 01Fresh Produce

Capsicum, also called bell pepper and known in Swahili as pilipili hoho, is a sweet, mild pepper eaten raw in salads or cooked in stir-fries, sauces and grills. Red and yellow capsicums are the same plant as green ones, left on the plant to ripen fully: that is what gives them their colour, sweetness and higher value. ShambaFresh supplies fresh red and yellow capsicum from growers in Mkuranga, in the Coast (Pwani) region just south of Dar es Salaam, to commercial buyers at home and abroad.

We supply whole fresh capsicum in red and yellow, sorted by colour and graded by size, packed separately or as a mixed colour pack. Fruit is picked fully coloured, firm and glossy, with the stem attached. Green capsicum can be discussed on request.

Origin & farming

PRD 02Sourcing

Our capsicum comes from Mkuranga, in the Coast (Pwani) region just south of Dar es Salaam. Warm weather, sandy-loam soils and careful watering grow firm, thick-walled fruit, and the farms sit close enough to the city to reach Dar es Salaam within hours of picking. We buy through our outgrower network there, so every lot has a named, traceable origin.

Our produce is organically grown and non-GMO wherever we list it so: farmers rely on natural farming — crop rotation, mulching, compost and careful water management — supported by agronomy guidance from our team. It is not certified organic; if your market requires certification, tell us in your enquiry.

Quality, harvest & handling

PRD 03Every step
01

Quality control

Each lot is checked for full, even colour, firm thick walls, a glossy skin, a fresh green stem and freedom from sunscald, soft spots, cracks and rot. Fruit that falls short is set aside so what you receive matches the order.

02

Harvesting

Coloured capsicum is picked by hand once it has turned fully red or yellow on the plant, cut with a short stem to protect the fruit, and kept in the shade after picking.

03

Sorting & grading

Fruit is sorted by colour, then graded by size and shape into the classes you buy, so a kitchen or retailer gets an even, consistent product.

04

Packaging

Capsicum is packed in ventilated cartons or crates, by single colour or mixed, loose or in retail packs where required. Pack size and labelling follow your specification.

05

Storage

Capsicum keeps best cool but not cold — around 7–10 °C with high humidity. Too cold causes chilling damage, too warm softens the fruit, so we hold it in suitable conditions between packing and dispatch.

06

Transport

From Mkuranga, capsicum reaches Dar es Salaam by road within hours of packing, and goes across to Zanzibar from Dar es Salaam; Tanga and Arusha are served by road. For export it moves on a cool chain by air or refrigerated sea freight from Dar es Salaam, kept above chilling temperature.

Seasonal availability

Capsicum is harvested over several weeks from each planting, and staggered plantings extend availability through the year. Supply of fully coloured fruit varies with the season, so we confirm current volumes against each enquiry.

Supply is aggregated across our outgrower network, which lets us plan repeatable volumes rather than one-off lots. Tell us your volume, colour split and delivery days and we will confirm what we can meet.
