Product overview

PRD 01Fresh Produce

Sweet corn — mahindi matamu in Swahili — is a type of maize bred to hold much more sugar in its kernels, eaten fresh as a vegetable rather than dried and milled like field maize. Hotels and restaurants use it for grills, salads, soups and buffets. ShambaFresh supplies fresh sweet corn from growers in Mkuranga, in the Coast (Pwani) region just south of Dar es Salaam, to commercial buyers in Dar es Salaam, Zanzibar and beyond.

We supply sweet corn as fresh cobs, either in the husk, which protects the kernels and keeps them moist, or trimmed and partly husked for kitchens that want them ready to cook. Cobs are picked when the kernels are full, plump and milky, and graded by size.

Origin & farming

PRD 02Sourcing

Our sweet corn comes from Mkuranga, in the Coast (Pwani) region just south of Dar es Salaam, where warm weather and the coastal rains suit the crop. Because sweet corn starts losing its sweetness soon after picking, growing it this close to the city is a real advantage: cobs reach Dar es Salaam within hours. We buy through our outgrower network there, so every lot has a named, traceable origin.

Our produce is organically grown and non-GMO wherever we list it so: farmers rely on natural farming — crop rotation, mulching, compost and careful water management — supported by agronomy guidance from our team. It is not certified organic; if your market requires certification, tell us in your enquiry.

Quality, harvest & handling

PRD 03Every step
01

Quality control

Each lot is checked for well-filled cobs with plump, milky kernels to the tip, fresh green husks and moist silk, and freedom from insect damage, dried or dented kernels and mould. Cobs that fall short are set aside so what you receive matches the order.

02

Harvesting

Sweet corn is picked by hand at the milk stage, when a pressed kernel gives a milky juice. Its sugar starts turning to starch soon after picking, so it is harvested in the cool of the morning and moved to market quickly.

03

Sorting & grading

Cobs are sorted by size and fill, and graded into the classes you buy, so a kitchen or retailer gets an even product from one delivery to the next.

04

Packaging

Sweet corn is packed in ventilated crates or bags by count or weight, in the husk or trimmed, or in retail trays where required. Pack size and labelling follow your specification.

05

Storage

Sweet corn keeps its sweetness best cold, close to 0 °C with high humidity. We keep it cool and shaded from picking to dispatch and keep the time to market short.

06

Transport

From Mkuranga, sweet corn reaches Dar es Salaam by road within hours of picking, and goes across to Zanzibar from Dar es Salaam; Tanga and Arusha are served by road. For export it moves on a cold chain, usually by air from Dar es Salaam, because of its short shelf life.

Frequently asked questions

FAQBuyer questions

What is sweet corn in Swahili?

Sweet corn is mahindi matamu in Swahili — literally “sweet maize”.

What is the difference between sweet corn and maize?

Sweet corn is a type of maize bred to keep much more sugar in its kernels. It is picked young, at the milk stage, and eaten fresh as a vegetable. Field maize is left to dry on the plant and milled for flour (unga) or used for animal feed.

Where is your sweet corn grown?

In Mkuranga, in the Coast (Pwani) region just south of Dar es Salaam. Sweet corn loses sweetness quickly after picking, and being this close to the city means it reaches Dar es Salaam kitchens within hours.

Do you supply sweet corn to hotels in Dar es Salaam and Zanzibar?

Yes. We supply hotels, restaurants and caterers in Dar es Salaam, Arusha and Zanzibar on a regular schedule, in the husk or trimmed. Tell us your weekly volume and delivery days.

Is your sweet corn organic and non-GMO?

It is organically grown and non-GMO, using natural farming methods. It is not certified organic. If your market requires certification, tell us your destination and we will be straight with you about what we can offer.

How long does fresh sweet corn keep?

Sweet corn is best eaten within a few days of picking; its sugar turns to starch over time, faster when warm. Kept cold, in the husk, it holds its quality longest, which is how we handle it.

What is the minimum order?

It depends on the destination, pack and delivery schedule. Tell us your target volume and we will come back with what we can meet and the terms.
