Tanzania is one of Africa’s leading cashew producers, and cashew is one of the country’s most important export crops. ShambaFresh supplies cashew in both of its traded forms — raw cashew nuts (RCN) still in the shell, and processed kernels graded for the food trade — sourced through our farming and outgrower network. Southern Tanzania — the regions around Mtwara, Lindi and Ruvuma — is the heart of the country’s cashew belt, where the warm coastal climate and sandy soils suit the tree. Nuts are aggregated from these growing areas through our outgrower network, giving a consistent, traceable supply base rather than one-off purchases from the open market.

Cashew in Tanzania is grown largely by smallholders, and we work with organic-minded practices supported by agronomy guidance for our outgrowers. Good orchard management and correct timing at harvest are what set the out-turn and quality of the nut, so the crop comes in clean and to a repeatable standard.

Quality control

RCN is assessed on the qualities processors care about — nut size, dryness and out-turn — while kernels are inspected on grade, colour, wholeness and freedom from defect. Every consignment is checked against the specification agreed with the buyer before it leaves us, so what a buyer receives matches what was ordered.

Harvesting

Cashew is harvested after the cashew apple ripens and drops, when the nut is separated from the apple and sun-dried to the correct dryness for safe storage. Drying the raw nut down properly is the single most important control for RCN, because under-dried nuts do not store or travel well.

Sorting & grading

Raw cashew nuts are cleaned, sized and graded by out-turn for the processing trade. For kernels, the nut is shelled, dried, peeled and then graded into the standard classes — white wholes such as W240 and W320, scorched wholes, splits and pieces — sorted by size, colour and wholeness. Grading to a recognised class is what lets a buyer price, blend and pack with confidence, so we grade to the class you specify.

Packaging

Raw cashew nuts are packed in jute or woven bulk bags for the processing trade. Kernels are vacuum-packed or gas-flushed in tins or pouches inside export cartons — the standard that protects kernels from moisture and keeps them fresh in transit. Retail and private-label kernel formats are available to specification.

Storage

Cashew is a dry, shelf-stable product, held cool, dry and sealed between grading and dispatch. Kernels in particular are kept in moisture-barrier packaging to guard against damp and rancidity, so they reach the buyer in the condition they were graded in.

Transport

Cashew ships at ambient temperature — RCN and kernels both move by sea freight in containers for bulk volumes, and by air for smaller or time-sensitive kernel orders. Sealed, moisture-protected packaging keeps the nut in condition throughout the journey.
